Uruguay Carries Out a Series of Activities in Interprofessional Education
From June 17 to 20, 2019, under the framework of the Interprofessional Education (IPE) Action Plan for Uruguay, the Faculty of Nursing (Fenf, Spanish acronym) of Uruguay’s University of the Republic carried out a series of activities to advance IPE in the university setting and in health services.
IPE in the Permanent Education Program
Based on these activities, a permanent education course was held at the Postgraduate Center of the University’s Faculty of Nursing. The course was entitled "Management of Emotions in Interprofessional Clinical Work". It had as its objective "To develop cross-disciplinary competences for effective work in interprofessional teams".
IPE Meeting and Conference
A meeting was also held with the pediatric palliative care team of the Pereira Rossell Hospital, which was attended by students from different health backgrounds (i.e., Nursing, Medicine, Psychology). The activity was part of the requirements of an elective course, involving exchanging experiences, to help guide students and health professionals in using IPE.
The same morning, a conference on IPE was held for the teaching and assistance teams of the Pediatrics and Neonatology which was attended by several teachers and students.
Conversation about IPE
To conclude the cycle of IPE activities, on June 20, 2019, the "Conversation on Plans and Programs of Interprofessional Education" was held at the University. The objective of the discussion was to share experiences with participating teachers, emphasizing the importance of interprofessional teamwork, and identifying the strengths and challenges that arise for implementation.
IPE in Uruguay
The activities of the Uruguay Plan contribute to the promotion of IPE by the Nursing Faculty of the University of the Republic (Udelar, Spanish acronym). These activities were made possibly through the work of the Director Mercedes Perez who, together with the Ministries of Health and Education and the PAHO national office in Uruguay, has been responsible for promoting the theme of IPE in the country.
On December 3 and 4, 2018, the first Interprofessional Health Education Meeting was held in Uruguay. The objectives of the activity were to sensitize and train teachers, students and professionals in IPE, to identify previous experiences in education and interprofessional work at the Udelar and to generate new proposals.
Over the next year, Uruguay proposes to hold another event on the theme of IPE, where it will be possible to evaluate its implementation and the possibility of creating an IPE national network.
The country's goal is to have its health teams incorporate the interprofessional work approach as broadly as possible, i.e., cross-country.
PAHO and the Theme of Interprofessional Education in Health
There are currently 19 countries in the region of the Americas that have action plans to implement IPE in healthcare over the period of 2018-2019. These plans propose joint work between local Ministries of Health, Ministries of Education, academic institutions and professional associations. The goal is to expand the number of countries having such action plans in the Caribbean region.
The present initiative is the result of an agreement between PAHO / WHO and the countries participating in the Second Regional Technical Meeting on Interprofessional Health Education, "Improving the Capacity of Human Resources to Achieve Universal Health". The Meeting was organized jointly by PAHO / WHO and by the Brazilian Ministry of Health, and was held in Brasilia, Brazil, from December 5 to 6, 2017.
