Brazil officially initiates the activities of the PET-HEALTH / INTERPROFESSIONALITY

On November 26 and 27, 2018, in the city of Brasília, Brazil, the Ministry of Health held the 1st Workshop with the coordinators of the Health Education Program (PET-Health). The ninth edition of the program has the thematic of Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practices in Health.

PET-Health / Interprofessionality is part of the set of activities foreseen in the lines of action of the national plan for the implementation of Interprofessional Education (IPE) in Brazil (years 2018 and 2019) presented to the Pan American Health Organization / World Health Organization (PAHO / WHO ) by the Ministry of Health, together with the Ministry of Education and the Brazilian Network for Education and Interprofessional Work in Health.

What is PET-Health?

The Program of Education for Work to Health (PET-Health) is a program of the Ministries of Health and Education of Brazil aimed at making perfecting and specialization in service possible, as well as initiation into work, internships and experiences, directed to professionals, students of the health area and users of health services, in accordance with the needs of the System Unified Health (SUS)  Brazilian. The purpose of the program is to promote the teaching-service-community integration, with the mission of strengthening education for health work, through the availability of scholarships for tutors, who are teachers of universities, preceptors (professionals of the services) and undergraduate students in the health area.

All regions of the country were considered with approved projects for the edition of PET-Health / Interprofessionality. In total, 120 approved projects, with approximately 7,000 participants - among graduates from the health area, teachers, professionals and managers of health services - who will be involved in the actions of the program for two years.

The PET-Health / Interprofessionality is one of the most promising initiatives for implementation of the IPE in Brazil, since it will allow the integration between universities and health services in the development of activities that will be used from the concepts of the IPE in the training of the students of the most diverse professional categories of the health area, as in educational processes for health professionals, in the logic of Permanent Education, involving users of health services, even contemplating actions for training of teachers for the IPE.

During the workshop, the 120 coordinators of the PET-Health / Interprofessionality received guidance on the operational aspects of the program - attributions and commitments - and discussed the conceptual and methodological bases of Interprofessional Education (IPE), as well as a broad discussion on the mechanisms of communication, evaluation, monitoring and follow-up of the projects that will begin in the month of December 2018.

At the end of the event, which included the participation of the Ministry of Education, the Brazilian Network for Education and Interprofessional Work in Health (REBETIS) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO / WHO), a set of publications was launched to support the process of implementation of PET-Health / Interprofessionality projects in Brazil.
